Rebuilding Sirombu Village

Sirombu, one of the most remote locations to be hit by the Asian tsunami, is located on the in west coast of Nias Island - Indonesia. Zero to One Foundation has teamed up with both Australian Red Cross and United In Diversity to complete two community development projects to this hard reaching community. Combined the projects will supply victims with 501 permanent, modern, concrete houses and also supporting infrastructure such as schools, clinics, water and electrical systems.
Zero to One Foundation is proud to say that they are utilising the local labour force in Sirombu. Giving them a salary for reconstruction work, developing skills through training, and most of all getting the community members involved in helping build their own homes whilst fueling the local economy.

Problems Encountered
Since the site of Sirombu is so remote and the existing infrastructure of bridges and roads were so badly damaged undertaking these community development projects provided a variety of challenges for Zero to One Foundation and its building contractor KOJO. These included logistics delays, material shortages, communication breakdowns, labour supply, land issues, weather and a whole host of other problems. However, with in a 3 month period Zero to One Foundation has found solutions to all these obstacles faced and completed over 250 houses, 2 schools, 2 water systems and started a clinic as of January 1st 2006. Zero to One Foundation continues to deal with and solve these problems whilst achieving a steady rate of 3-4 houses per day.
